 Allspice is the unripe fruit of the Pimenta dioica. Once dried, the fruits look like fresh peppercorns. It isn’t (despite its name) a whole bunch of spices mixed together. It’s often mistaken for pumpkin spice because of flavours like cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon - but it has a seriously savoury backbone.

Around the world, allspice is used in both sweet and savoury ways: Jamaican jerk seasoning, Middle Eastern Baharat, Swedish pickled herring. Try using Allspice wherever you would pumpkin spice for some added complexity.
