This wonderful heirloom gourd works hard for the money! Not only can it be picked young and eaten much like our beloved courgettes, it can also be left to fully mature, dried and made into compostable household sponges which are so much more eco friendly than the plastic ones. Eat them when they’re young and tender or let them fully mature before drying.

A loofah is a cucumber like fruit, and when dried out can be used as an exfoliating sponge.

Sow the seeds indoors from late winter into early spring then transfer into a conservatory, greenhouse or outdoors in a sunny sheltered position.

To harvest the loofah fruit to use as a sponge you must first let the fruit mature fully then dry out.
